Adult Psychiatric Services We Provide
UConn Health Department of Psychiatry offers inpatient and outpatient treatment as well as specialty services for adults who are facing mental health challenges. No matter what kind of care you need, we have the right option for you.
Inpatient Psychiatric Services
We offer inpatient psychiatric services for anyone experiencing a severe mental health episode and needing high-level care during a crisis.
The Psychiatry team at UConn Health provides the following inpatient psychiatric services:
- Treatment at the Adult General Psychiatric Unit
This treatment is mainly for adults with mood disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions who require a hospital level of care. While staying at the psychiatric unit, our uniquely skilled team of medical care providers will complete many assessments and interventions. - Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service
We offer psychiatric consultations for patients during an inpatient stay at UConn Health John Dempsey Hospital. This service is geared toward: - Medical and surgical patients who develop neuropsychiatric manifestations of their medical illnesses
- Those experiencing a worsening pre-existing psychiatric condition
- Treatment at the Adult General Psychiatric Unit
Outpatient Psychiatric Services
We offer outpatient psychiatric services for anyone experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, or symptoms of other mental health disorders. This type of clinical service doesn’t require an overnight stay at the hospital, but you will still receive the mental and behavioral care you need through our outpatient care.
UConn Health Department of Psychiatry provides the following outpatient adult psychiatric services:
- Addictions Psychotherapy Services
The Outpatient Addictions Psychotherapy Services at UConn Health offer a person-centered, collaborative approach to substance use treatment. Individual and group therapies (Relapse Prevention, Seeking Safety) are offered. - Cognitive Processing Therapy
UConn Health offers the American Psychological Association recommended Cognitive Processing Therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder. This highly-effective treatment plan is evidence-based and short-term (often around 12 sessions). - Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive, multi-intervention treatment for emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, and/or suicidal and self-harming behaviors. Our DBT program meets three times each week for skills development groups and individual therapy sessions for 6-12 months. We also offer an advanced skills refresher group for graduates of the DBT program. - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) helps people heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. EMDR has been designated effective by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and more. - Mood and Anxiety Clinic
We provide comprehensive and compassionate care for anyone struggling with mood and anxiety symptoms across the lifespan. - Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient Program
This program provides psychotherapeutic services on a three-day-per-week, three-hour-per-day schedule for patients with primary mental health issues. - Dual Diagnosis Intensive Outpatient Program
Access psychotherapeutic services for patients with drug and alcohol use and mental health issues. The program runs for three hours a day, three days a week.

Specialty Psychiatric Services
UConn Health Department of Psychiatry provides the following specialty psychiatric services:
- Electroconvulsive Therapy: The most rapid and effective treatment for severe depression and is a highly effective treatment for other psychiatric conditions.
- Huntington’s Disease Program: A unique program in Connecticut, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care for patients with Huntington's disease.
- Neuropsychological Testing Services: An essential part of an overall psychiatric evaluation as we examine your brain function and cognitive abilities, revealing your strengths and weaknesses.
Esketamine Treatment
At UConn Health, we are committed to staying at the forefront of innovative treatments that improve the lives of our patients. We offer Esketamine, a groundbreaking FDA-approved medication that represents a significant advancement in mental health treatment. As a derivative of ketamine, a well-known anesthetic, esketamine has demonstrated rapid and effective relief for individuals struggling with treatment-resistant depression and certain mood disorders, as well as suicidal thoughts. Esketamine treatment involves the administration of a nasal spray under the supervision of our experienced medical professionals in a controlled and safe environment within our hospital setting.
Emergency Crisis Service
The Emergency Crisis Service in the UConn Health Emergency Department is open 24 hours every day. If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis, our service can assess and provide all levels of psychiatric care.
