Experts in Robotic Surgery

UConn Health is the local pioneer of robotic surgery. We use robots to enhance precision, flexibility, and control during the operation and visualize the surgical site better. Our innovative, cutting-edge technology enables us to perform delicate, complex, challenging or seemingly impossible procedures with accuracy. We utilize robots to increase your safety and comfort after the procedure and ensure the best possible outcomes.

Our expert surgeons are extensively trained in robotic surgery and fully equipped to carry out complex interventions. We are continuously increasing the number of robots at our disposal.

At UConn Health, we approach each patient individually and choose the least invasive treatment option that is appropriate for a particular diagnosis. Not every patient will be eligible for robot-assisted surgery. If your surgeon thinks a conventional approach is more appropriate, they will always recommend the best treatment plan for you.

  • What Is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery, also called robot-assisted surgery, allows surgeons to perform a range of complex procedures with precision and control over that of conventional techniques. The use of robots in surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery, as the incisions are very small. It is worth noting that robots can sometimes also be used in certain traditional open surgical procedures.

The most commonly used clinical robotic surgical system includes a camera arm and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached. The surgeon controls the arms and operates from the computer console while leading the other team members who assist during the operation. The console provides a high-definition, magnified, 3D view of the surgical site.

  • Patient Benefits of Robotic Surgery

Robot-assisted surgery is very precise and reliable. The optimal execution of the surgical intervention carries numerous benefits for patients, such as:

    • Fewer complications
    • Fewer chances of surgical site infection
    • Less pain and blood loss
    • Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery
    • Smaller, less noticeable scars
  • Risks of Robotic Surgery

Any form of surgery is associated with certain risks. Robot-assisted surgery may be similar to conventional open surgery in terms of risks of infections and other complications.

  • Am I Eligible for Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is not always an option for everyone. We strongly encourage you to discuss robotic surgery's benefits and risks with your doctor. It is important to see how it compares with other techniques, such as other types of minimally invasive surgery and conventional open surgery.

  • Robotic Surgery Usefulness

Robot-assisted surgery can be applied to general, cardiothoracic, urology, and many other surgical specialties.
