Endocrinology & Diabetes Specialties

We are your trusted destination for diabetes and endocrine system care. Our dedicated specialists are here to provide individualized diagnoses, management, and treatments for a variety of conditions. Our approach is always patient-centered, and we utilize leading-edge technologies to help tailor your care to your unique needs.

Pancreas Disorders

The pancreas is a gland that produces insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and other hormones that control blood sugar and glucose metabolism. The most common disorder of the pancreas is diabetes.

Our board-certified endocrinologists specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating diabetes, including primary, secondary, and diabetes that appears during pregnancy, also known as gestational diabetes.

We are very proud of our Diabetes Self-Management Education Program. It is designed to help you understand and learn how to live with your condition. The American Diabetes Association recognizes and praises our program. Registered nurses and dietitians who are Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists lead this series.

Through collaboration and discussions, you will learn how to plan your meals and count carbohydrates, control your weight, monitor blood glucose levels, test for ketones, align your physical activity and exercise with the use of insulin and medications, use insulin pumps and injectable medications, manage stress, and recognize diabetes complications.

Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, makes and secretes thyroid hormones that regulate your metabolism and various processes throughout the body.

Our board-certified endocrinologists specialize in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of:

  • Hyperthyroidism - the overproduction of hormones that can cause heart palpitations, sweating, and weight loss
  • Hypothyroidism - the underproduction hormones that can cause fatigue, weight gain, and constipation
  • Thyroiditis - inflammation of the thyroid gland
  • Goiters - enlargements of the thyroid gland
  • Solitary thyroid nodules - growths within the thyroid gland
  • Thyroid cancer - malignant growth within the thyroid gland

Parathyroid Disorders

Parathyroid glands are four small glands located behind the thyroid gland that secrete parathyroid hormone, which controls the body’s calcium levels.

One of the most common parathyroid disorders is hyperparathyroidism. It may cause thinning of the bones, known as osteoporosis, along with additional kidney problems.

Our board-certified endocrinologists specialize in diagnosing parathyroid hormone imbalance and bone density, as well as treating parathyroid disorders, osteoporosis, and other bone mineral disorders.

Adrenal Gland Disorders

The adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys and secrete adrenaline, aldosterone, and cortisol. These hormones maintain salt balance and blood pressure while helping maintain fluid concentrations in the body.

We also specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating Addison's Disease, Cushing's Syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, and adrenal tumors.

Pituitary Gland Disorders

The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and secretes hormones that control the activity of other glands, such as the ovaries, testes, adrenals, and thyroid.

Our UConn Health endocrinologists specialize in diagnosing, managing, and treating pituitary tumors, such as prolactinomas and hypopituitarism, a disorder in which pituitary hormone secretion is abnormally low.
